Brandon, Manitoba – The Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce that they have come to terms on a new five year broadcast agreement with Westman Communications Group / 880 CKLQ.
In making the announcement Wednesday afternoon at Canad Inns Brandon, CKLQ General Manager Cam Clark said that the new contract will begin with the 2012-13 Western Hockey League season and conclude with the 2016-17 campaign.
“CKLQ, Star FM and parent Company Westman Communications Group are extremely pleased to extend our broadcast relationship of the past 20 years through to 2017,” Clark said. “CKLQ is very proud to be the broadcaster of Wheat Kings hockey and to work with such a professional organization in the WHL. The new 5-year contract will solidify our strong on-air content, and allows Wheat Kings fans to hear every home and away game on 880 CKLQ as well as www.cklq.com.”
CKLQ has been the play-by-play voice of the Wheat Kings since 1992. Bruce Luebke will be returning for his twentieth season as the voice of the WHL club, making the 40-year old native of Ogema, Saskatchewan the longest serving broadcaster in franchise history and one of the league’s senior play by play announcers, joining the likes of Bob Ridley in Medicine Hat and Red Deer’s Cam Moon.
Since taking over as the play by play voice of the Wheat Kings, Luebke has called a total of 1,571 Western Hockey League games. A former Media Chairman of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Brandon, Luebke also called the action at both the 1995 (Kamloops) and ’96 (Peterborough) Cup Championships.
“The Wheat Kings are please to continue our partnership with CKLQ,” says Wheat Kings’ Owner and General Manager Kelly McCrimmon. “As voice of the Wheat Kings, they’re an extension of our organization and we value not only their role with the play by play but in the overall promotion of our team.”
The contract with CKLQ adds to the content already available on western Manitoba’s information station. In addition to broadcasting all pre-season, regular season and playoff games, the radio station will continue to host a 30 minute pre-game show, special intermission features as well as a variety of special programming such as the weekly Coaches Show. As well, CKLQ will again provide broadcasts through streaming audio on both the team and station websites and during all games televised through the league’s Webstreaming Video.
Under terms of the contract, CKLQ will remain the Title Sponsor of the hockey team’s annual Sportsman’s Dinner in February, the Presenting Sponsor of January’s Family Skate Night at Westman Place and will receive a number of advertising, ticket and promotional opportunities with the WHL club.
“We value the relationship that we have with the Wheat Kings,” Clark went on to say. “Kelly McCrimmon has made a strong commitment to put great teams and entertainment on the ice for so many years in our community.”
The Wheat Kings will kick off their 2012 pre-season schedule Thursday, September 6th in Regina against the Pats.
