Brandon, Manitoba – Tip Top Tailors, in conjunction with the Brandon Wheat Kings have announced that 16-year old rookie forward Jayce Hawryluk has been chosen the Western Hockey League club’s Player of the Month.
A former second round selection in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, Hawryluk was the only Wheat King to average at least a point per game during the month of December.
In eight games, the 5’10” 186 lb Roblin, Manitoba product had three goals and eight points to finish second in team scoring last month.
In addition to being eighth in scoring among first year players in the WHL this season, the former Parkland AAA Midget Ranger rejoined the Wheat Kings this past weekend after participating at the World Under 17 Challenge in Quebec.
Entering Tuesday night’s game against the visiting Calgary Hitmen at Westman Communications Group Place, Hawryluk has nine goals and 23 points in 34 games.
In 40 games with the Midget Rangers last winter, Hawryluk finished among the league scoring leaders with 31 goals and 67 points.
In recognition of the monthly honour, Hawryluk will receive a shirt, tie and suit from Tip Top Tailors in the Shoppers Mall, the official menswear clothier of the Wheat Kings, during this Saturday’s game against the visiting Regina Pats. He joins Ryan Pulock and Alessio Bertaggia as this year’s Tip Top winners.
The Wheat Kings, who will be hoping to snap a 4-game losing streak on Tuesday night, are currently 14-24-2-2 and eight points back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the WHL’s Eastern Division.
In related news, the Wheat Kings expect to have Swiss scoring star Bertaggia back in Brandon on Tuesday. The 19-year old left-winger, who represented Switzerland at this year’s World Junior Hockey Championships in Russia, will be recognized before Tuesday’s game against Calgary.
Tuesday night is the second “2 for Tuesday Night” of the season which means fans purchasing an adult ticket will receive a second one “free” (regular box office agency fees apply). As well, the Keystone Centre will be offering $2 hot dogs, $2 popcorn, $2 soft drinks and $2.99 beer.
Tickets to the game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
