St. Malo's Travis Hamonic

New York, NY -- The National Hockey League's New York Islanders announced today the signing of Travis Hamonic to a three-year entry-level contract.

Hamonic completed his four-year junior hockey league career with the Wheat Kings on Sunday as they were defeated by the Windsor Spitfires in the Memorial Cup Championship Final in Brandon.

The 6’2, 215 pound defenceman was named a 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup All-Star as he was instrumental in leading Brandon to the Championship Final, as the Wheat Kings upset both the QMJHL Champion Moncton Wildcats and Western Hockey League Champion Calgary Hitmen.

As well, Hamonic represented Team Canada at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Saskatoon. In six games during that tournament, the former Moose Jaw Warrior had a goal and three points. 

A native of St. Malo, Manitoba, the second round draft choice of the Islanders was obtained by the Wheat Kings at January's WHL Trade deadline in exchange for 17-year old defenceman Dallas Erhardt and three bantam draft picks.

In 171 career games as a Warrior, Travis scored 28 goals and 104 points. In ten regular season games with Brandon, he had one goal and 5 points.

Hamonic becomes the fourth member of the Wheat Kings to sign NHL contracts over the course of the past two months. He joins Matt Calvert (Columbus Blue Jackets), Brayden Schenn (Los Angeles Kings) and Colby Robak (Florida Panthers).
